The National Food and Nutrition Institute (NFNI or IZZ) is the state research institute founded in 1963 through the resolution of the Council of Ministers. NFNI’s activities have focused mainly on prevention and treatment of diet-related diseases and obesity, developing and disseminating standards of nutrition and dietary recommendations for the population of Poland, and the tables of composition and nutrient value of food, the epidemiological surveys of nutrition and nutritional status, studies of trends in nutrition and food safety.izz poland

There are 4 research departments within the organisational structure of the Institute, i.e. the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics with the Clinic of Metabolic Diseases and Gastroenterology; the Department of Food Safety and Dietary Supplements; the Department of Genomics and Genetics of the Metabolic Diseases; the Department of the Prevention of the Diet-related Diseases with the outpatient Clinic of Metabolic Diseases. The Centre for the Promotion of the Healthy Nutrition and Physical Activity operates also within this structure.

The leader of the Polish part of the Food4Me project is Assistant Professor Iwona Traczyk in human nutrition (professor of IZZ). She is the Deputy Director for Scientific Research and Head of Laboratory of Nutritional Health Risk Factor. Her field of competence covers human nutrition, public health and food safety. She is a member of the Executive Board of the Polish Scientific Nutrition Society.

Iwona Traczyk

iwonaIwona Traczyk is Assistant Professor (professor of the Polish National Food and Nutrition Institute) in human nutrition. She is the Deputy Director for Scientific Research and Head of Laboratory of Nutritional Health Risk Factor. Her field of competence covers human nutrition, public health and food safety. Currently her main research interests is food allergy.

She is a member of Executive Board of the Polish Scientific Nutrition Society. She was the leader of WP 2 "Diet" in the "Chemical Food Safety Network for the enlarging Europe (SAFEFOODNET)" which was conducted as a 6 PR EU Project. (2005-2006). Currently she is participating in the 7 PR EU Project "Flavours, additives and food contact material exposure task" (FACET).

Role and responsibility in Food4Me

Iwona's role in the Food4Me study is leading the research team in the National Food and Nutrition Institute.


Sylwia Pietrak

sylwiaM.Sc. Sylwia Pietrak Education: Faculty of Human Nutrition and dietetic on Warsaw University of Life Sciences - SGGW. In her master thesis She discussed the issue of vegetarian and conventional diets. She has worked as technologist in the National Food and Nutrition Institute since 2009. She participated with comparison of IgE and IgG antibodies concentration against food allergens in IBS patients and healthy individuals. Currently She is participating in the 7 PR EU Project "Flavours, additives and food contact material exposure task" (FACET). Her main research activity is genetically modified food

Role and responsibility in Food4Me

Sylwia's in the Food4Me study is carrying out dietary analysis and providing dietary advice to Poland-based Food4Me participants. The National Food and Nutrition Institute is responsible for running the Poland arm of the proof of principle, a Europe-wide multicentre intervention trial.
